Frugal Family Recipes (featured column)

This has been my favorite smoothie for many years and makes a great meal replacement. Especially when you need a quick and filling meal but one that does not take up a lot of room in the stomach and is easy to digest. I'm pretty sure Starbucks makes theirs with water but I prefer a little almond milk instead. And oh how I'm loving the cost of making my own at home (for just pennies!) compared to the higher priced option.

Category: Recipes, Beverages, Smoothies
Prep Time: 5 minutes
Yield: 1 serving
1 c. crushed ice, or about 6 large cubes
1/2 - 1 c. Almond milk (or regular milk if you prefer)
2 scoops chocolate protein powder (your favorite brand)
1/2 medium banana
Directions:
In a blender or smoothie maker add ice and milk. Blend until ice is crushed well. Next, add protein powder and banana half. Blend until smooth and combined.
Although my recipe makes enough for one large smoothie, if you want a smaller serving (or need to share), divide this into two smaller servings. Though I'm not sure why you would do that, because it is SO delicious and controls hunger for hours and hours. Better to make 2 full sized smoothies by just doubling the entire recipe. We do it all the time. Enjoy!
Peanut Butter Variation: Sometimes I also add a spoonful of natural peanut butter at the same time as the banana.
Chocolate Covered Cherries: When cherries are in season, I add about 6 cherries cut in half with pit removed. With the chocolate protein powder it make the smoothie taste like chocolate covered cherries.
What smoothies do you enjoy making at home?
