Frugal Fall Fun: Plant a Pumpkin Patch

Planting a pumpkin patch 1

"Fresh Air and Family Fun"

What's more fall than being outdoors on a farm? For Halloween it's picking your own pumpkin right out of a pumpkin patch. Then a hayride behind a real farm tractor while sitting right on the haybales. This picture captures both while giving a sense of the beautiful sunshine and outdoor fresh air.

We planted the pumpkin patch back in the spring ourselves. The fence is used to keep out deer and was also assembled by us. The vertical timbers were salvaged from an old split rail fence someone was giving away. The trailers are scraps of an old bedsheet (the movement disorients deer who don't like to jump where they can't see well). The tractor was purchased secondhand from a gentleman and fixed up by my dad and uncle. The wagon base was also purchased second-hand. The wagon itself was built by my uncles with wood also obtained secondhand from someone who didn't need it anymore.

The essence of farm life is making do with what you have or finding ways to get what you need without spending a lot of money.
