Homemade Halloween Costumes: Ho-Ho-Ho Christmas Gifts

Christmas present costumes

It's important to me that I teach my son the value of reusing, recycling and being appreciative of what we already have. When it comes to Halloween costumes, the value remains the same. We use our creativity and items in our home to make really fun and interesting costumes. This year, in the spirit of DIY and saving money, we decided to enjoy Christmas a little early by dressing up as presents from Santa Claus.

My 7 year old son and I took cardboard boxes, wrapped them in wrapping paper and reused bows from last year. We made two different types. For his, we cut out a hole for his head so the box could fit around him. For my gift costume, I wrapped a flat cardboard piece in wrapping paper then used a lanyard to hang around my neck instead. These costumes are easy to create in your own home and can be done using materials you likely already own. While we used the tag "From Santa" on it, you can get creative and customize it to your own liking.

And best of all, it teaches kids the value of not being wasteful or materialistic. It also helps them tap into their creative side and being able to take pride in a costume they made themselves!
