"Patchwork Christmas Ball"
This is an ornament that my sisters-in-law and I began making several years ago. We have made a variety of colors and personalized them to fit our tastes and decor. I have given them as gifts as well as taught friends how to make them. These are now put on my children's Christmas tree, as they will inherit these as their special ornaments some day. These are simple to make once you make one. My seven year old daughter can easily help in making them.
Materials:
2" Styrofoam ball
Scrap material cut in 2" squares
Pins
Pearl beads with hole
Ribbon
Lace
Florist Pin
Instructions:
Begin with a 2" Styrofoam ball, use stick pins to attach 2" square fabric to the ball directly across from each other on the ball. Next choose one side of the ball to work with at a time.
Use a matching piece of fabric insert the pin in the center of both pieces of fabric, fold the 2nd piece of fabric in half (hiding the pin) then pull the corners to fold into a triangle, pin each corner.
Continue to do this on all four sides of the material.
Begin the second layer of material with a coordinating fabric coming about 1/2 way down the material that is attached to the ball. You will continue to pin all corners, folding and pinning as with the first layer.
Repeat with a 3rd layer of material to complete side 1.
Once one side is complete, repeat on the 2nd side, then trim with lace, ribbon or other decoration.
To attach the hanging ribbon I weaved ribbon back and forth on a Florist Pin, arranged it then hot glued it into the top of the ball.
