Homemade Christmas Ornaments: Glitter Star

Submitted by Lori Knowles of California

Martha Stewart's Glitter Star Ornaments

"Martha Stewart's Glitter Star"

This ornament is made with glue, glitter and ribbon. That's it! The ornament will be very stiff, but extremely lightweight. You can make these for Christmas ornaments or package decorations. I like the versatility of this project. I used gold glitter on my star, but you can try different color combinations, such as a silver star with light blue ribbon.

Here are the instructions:

1. Trace a cookie cutter shape onto computer paper or print one out. Use a star cookie cutter with sharp, defined points and not rounded points. The reason you will want this is because the glue "spreads out." Don't be discouraged when you first look at your glue design, because the glue will "shrink" into more defined points as it dries. I haven't tried this with any other glue, other than the white glue, so I'll be experimenting with others, as well.

2. Slip the paper underneath a sheet of waxed paper.

3. Trace the outline of the star with regular Elmer's White Glue. Be VERY generous with the glue! This will make a "wall," so you can fill in the rest of the star with the glue.

4. Sprinkle glitter generously all over the top. I used Martha Stewart's glitter in "Florentine Gold." Allow to dry for THREE WHOLE DAYS or until it is completely dry. Remember, the longer it cures, the harder it becomes.

5. After completely dried, gently peel the star off the waxed paper and shake the glitter off.  Punch a hole at the top and slip a ribbon through. The glitter will show through the star to the other side, because the glue is clear. At this point, allow the star you lifted off the waxed paper to air dry a couple more days and it will become even harder.
