Homemade Christmas Ornaments: Wood Scroll Patterns

Submitted by Samantha Booker of Mississippi

Wood Scroll Ornaments

"Trash to Treasure Wood Scroll Ornaments"

This ornament was made for my daughter, Lorelai's, first Christmas. My dad (Bruce Hohlt) made it using a scroll saw and a wood scrap from a local cabinetry shop. Many of the local shops allow him to "Dumpster Dive" as we call it, pulling out scraps that are too small for the company to use, but perfect for small projects.

You can find scroll saw patterns including the letters and numbers shown at your local library and simply photocopy the pattern and use masking tape to affix it to the wood. For this particular design, place the pattern in such a way that the edges of the letters are connected to the outer circle. It is sometimes necessary to drill a small hole in the wood to thread the scroll saw blade through to begin cutting.

With a little time and ingenuity you can make a special personalized gift that will last for years to come.
