These are the steps for a modestly glittered placemat for a touch of glam underneath the mason jar and wooden slab look for a wedding reception or other event. My challenge was getting the curl out of the rolled mesh and apply a little glitter after cutting out the round placemat. (Skip ironing, it does not work).
Tips:
These supplies will make up 35 placemats with 19" circumference. Depending on your supplier, sisal rolls may vary in width.
Paint 3 batches of approximately 12 placemats at a time. Each batch will then dry completely overnight.
The only 3 items purchased are the Mod Podge, glitter (optional) and Sisal Mesh.
Supplies:
1 pair of scissors (or rotary cutter)
1 roll of scotch tape
1 black marker
1 large garbage bag
Measuring tape
1 paint brush (2" or larger)
2 large pieces cardboard (at least 20" x 20")
Roll of wax paper
16 ounces Mod Podge (glossy)
2 ounces extra fine glitter (if desired)
4 rolls of 19" x 5 yds Sisal Mesh rolls
1 disposable bowl
Measure and cut a cardboard circle template of your desired circumference.
Prepare 12 wax paper blotters that will go in between each of the 12 placemats. For each blotter, cut 2 wax paper pieces about 20" long. Slightly overlap them in the center and tape them together on one side with small pieces of tape.
Place the other piece of cardboard under the mesh before marking and cutting. Use the cardboard circle template to mark and cut out the first 12 (or all) of the placemats. Cut inside the black circle marks.
Cut open the large garbage bag to cover your work area as you begin to work with the Mod Podge.
If you desire glitter on your placemats, pour out (and save) about 2 ounces of
Mod Podge to make room for the glitter. Add the glitter into the Mod Podge slowly and stir into the entire bottle.
Pour about a 1/2 cup of Mod Podge into the disposable bowl. Apply a thin layer to the entire mat with fast, broad strokes on both sides (about 3 brush dips per side) and a little extra on the edges.
Move wet placemat to a wax paper blotter. Place another blotter on top of the wet placemat.
Repeat steps 6 and 7 until all 12 are painted.
After the last blotter is placed on the 12th placemat, place the large uncut piece of cardboard on top of the last blotter. Put something heavy on top of the stack (like a case of bottled water) and allow the stack to dry overnight. Wash your brush with water and let it air dry until needed the next day. (Add back in the 2 ounces of Mod Podge we set aside. Stir again and close up the bottle.)
The next day, the wax paper blotters will peel off easily once dry. Use them again for the other 2 batches of placemats.
When all 35 are done and dry, stack them all and place the cardboard and heavy object on them again to completely get rid of the curl. The longer the better.
