Life is Like a Box of Chocolates

Submitted by Michelle Jones, Founder of BetterBudgeting

Life can be very unpredictable, at least for most of us. In the movie Forrest Gump, Tom Hanks even summed up the idea humorously when his character mused, "Mama always said life was like a box of chocolates. You never know what you're gonna get."

I love this quote (and chocolate!), and I was just wondering what if life really were like a box of chocolates? Not just a metaphor, but literally. Like each individual chocolate might represent a season of our lives.

Just for fun, here's a few things to consider:

First, someone else has to make the chocolates. At least for today's discussion. Second, we would have to either buy the box of chocolates ourselves or someone would have to gift it to us.

If buying the chocolate box ourselves, one would hope we would be able to choose any type we want. But maybe we would only have a few choices. Or maybe even just two choices. Like nutty or cream filled, milk chocolate or dark chocolate. Maybe some of us would choose a good variety if that were an option, but I'm betting most of us would simply choose our favorite. Dark chocolate covered almonds would be mine. Or maybe salted caramels. Or maybe...

However, if someone else were to choose our box of chocolates for us, it would really be nice if they knew which kind we liked best. But what if they knew we might like or dislike any choice at any time, and a good variety of chocolates would truly be the best gift? And, maybe having some of the chocolates we don't like as much, mixed in with the ones we like the best, would actually make the "good ones" even better.

Yep, that pretty much sums it up. Life is like a box of chocolates!
